Prioritising our nurses - their health, well-being and recognition

Our Nurses, Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies. International Nurses' Day 2025.
As the world commemorates International Nurses Day, Life Healthcare CEO Peter Wharton-Hood, reaffirms their unwavering commitment to supporting the vital healthcare workforce that forms the backbone of our communities.
Amidst mounting global challenges - including mental and physical health pressures -recognition grows that caring for our nurses is fundamental to a resilient healthcare system. The theme for this year’s International Nurses Day, “Our Nurses, Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies,” underscores how a healthy, supported nursing workforce is essential to the overall functioning and sustainability of healthcare.
“Nurses who feel respected, recognised, and empowered are more capable of delivering high-quality care,” says Pete Wharton-Hood, CEO of Life Healthcare. “When we prioritise their well-being, we not only enhance their resilience but also improve patient outcomes.”
Nurses constitute approximately 80% of Life Healthcare’s healthcare workforce. Wharton-Hood emphasises that when employees are valued and supported, they bring their best selves to work, fostering a positive environment for both staff and patients
According to the 2025 International Nurses Day Report by the International Council of Nurses, nurses worldwide continue to face significant challenges-including chronic understaffing, demanding environments and limited resources. These factors contribute to rising burnout rates, which threaten both individual well-being and the sustainability of healthcare systems.
“Locally, we are witnessing a brain drain, where skilled healthcare workers, including nurses, seek better opportunities abroad, exacerbating staffing shortages and increasing pressure on our nurses”, adds Wharton-Hood.
Global data reveals that between 11% and 30% of nurses experience burnout, a reflection of the mental health challenges intensified since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Merle Victor, Chief Nurse Officer at Life Healthcare, says “Many of our nurses face personal and professional stressors, Nurses are not immune to the social and economic challenges that many South Africans experience, such as rising costs of living,” she explains. “Supporting their mental health through accessible resources and wellness initiatives is vital to remaining a resilient workforce”
Recent studies – such as the one published in the International Nursing Review – underscore the importance of mental health support, especially after the loss of friends, family and co-workers during the pandemic. Interventions like social support and recognition programs have proven effective in reducing burnout and improving overall health states the report.
