Addressing recent funding allegations and ensuring continued patient care
Johannesburg, 21 June 2024 - Life Healthcare, in its capacity as a legitimate service provider to Nkanyisa Recovery Centre NPC, is aware of recent media coverage concerning an existing Gauteng Department of Social Development investigative report on its funding of Non-Profit Companies including Nkanyisa Recovery Centre NPC.
We refute the allegations made in the media reports, which contain numerous factual inaccuracies. A fair and impartial investigation will result in a finding of no wrongdoing or unethical behaviour by either Life Healthcare or the Nkanyisa Recovery Centre NPC.
Life Healthcare has never been provided with an opportunity to peruse and consider the report and therefore cannot comment on the findings included in the report. The Nkanyisa Recovery Centre NPC has been running this contract with the Gauteng Department of Social Development for eight years. Both the Department and the Nkanyisa Recovery Centre NPC are subject to annual audits, with no adverse findings pertaining to Nkanyisa Recovery Centre NPC being communicated or reported over this period. Life Healthcare has always operated and continues to operate with integrity and transparency, and we stand by our continued commitment to ethical business practices.
The Department of Social Development remains in debt to the Nkanyisa Recovery Centre NPC for the amount of R172.6m for services properly rendered to date. Despite the delays in payment, the Nkanyisa Recovery Centres NPC faces, we are advised that it remains committed to providing the highest quality of care to those vulnerable patients who remain in its care.
We have requested the Department to share the report with us, and we will comment, if necessary, once we have been able to review it.

About Nkanyisa Recovery Centre NPC
Nkanyisa Recovery Centre is registered at the National Department of Social Development as Nkanyisa Recovery Centre non-profit company (NPC). Life Healthcare, acts in its capacity as a service provider to Nkanyisa Recovery Centre NPC. Nkanyisa Recovery Centre NPC has been contracted by Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) to deliver recovery healthcare services for state substance abusers for the past 8 years with about 4,800 persons benefiting from the GDSD-funded programme each year. The Centre is registered for 750 beds and can accommodate 750 service users at any given point and has two sites in Gauteng located in Witpoort and Randfontein. The Centre provides a six-week in-patient treatment programme and a halfway house programme.
