Introduction

Job Title:  Speech and Language Therapist
Location: Life Rehabilitation Unit at Life New Kensington Clinic
Reporting Line: Therapy Services Coordinator
Job Summary: Providing holistic speech and language therapy services for all patients admitted to the Rehabilitation Unit.

Critical Outputs
  • Provide speech and language therapy clinical to all patients admitted to Life Rehabilitation Unit, including on some weekends and public holidays.
  • Conduct assessments, plan programmes and administer treatment to patients to patients with e.g. neurological disorders such as TBI, CVA, SCI, orthopaedic conditions or multi-morbidity conditions such as Guillain Barre, etc. in collaboration with other therapy disciplines.
  • Assess all Stroke patient’s and other relevant patients swallowing risks upon admission and prior to oral feeds.
  • Work closely with the dietician regarding dietary needs and food consistency.
  • Educate patients and their families about the patient’s condition.
  • Participate in discharge planning and carer training.
  • Contribute to weekly team and family meetings.
  • Keep accurate and timeous records and reports.
  • Effectively respond to queries and handle accordingly.
  • Professional therapy service implementation in accordance with Life Healthcare protocols and procedures.
  • Function effectively as a part of an interdisciplinary team to meet the requirements of quality patient care.
  • Attend and contribute towards Continuous Professional Development activities of the unit.
  • Supervise and train of university students, as required.
  • Promote and maintain sound and productive relationships with referral sources and stakeholders in the field of Rehabilitation.
Requirements
  • B degree in Speech and Language Therapy and current HPCSA registration.
  • At least 3-5 years’ Experience in hospital-based rehabilitation and ability to work independently, without supervision.
  • Special interest in the treatment of adults with neurological disorders, NDT training an advantage
  • High level of competence in dysphagia and tracheostomy management is required.
  • Experience in advanced swallowing investigations an advantage.
