Introduction

Job Title:  Full time Senior Speech and Language Therapist
Location: Life Rehabilitation Unit at Kensington Clinic
Reporting Line: Therapy Services Coordinator
Job Summary: Provide discipline-specific clinical leadership to therapists in the Acute Rehabilitation Team to ensure appropriate clinical knowledge, skill and competence within the specific therapy discipline and provide discipline-specific clinical services for all patients admitted to the Rehabilitation Unit. 

Critical Outputs

Leading the clinical processes in the discipline-specific team to deliver a high standard of clinical rehabilitation

  • Implementing up-to-date clinical practice within a specific discipline
  • Provide or facilitate training on new practices
  • Coordinate change implementation within discipline and wider team
  • Participate in the development of national, discipline-specific clinical and quality standards

Training and mentoring to facilitate skills development within discipline

  • Identification of training needs within discipline
  • Coordination of training activities within the unit
  • Formal mentoring of junior staff and students within the discipline as well as other disciplines
  • Participate in training to Nurses and Rehabilitation Attendants
  • Participate in external training, as required

Facilitate access to appropriate discipline-specific equipment

  • Keep up to date on new equipment in the field of rehabilitation, including basic and advanced equipment
  • Participate in planning for equipment in unit, including identification of gaps and recommendation of new equipment

Supporting the Therapy Services Coordinator in managing the team towards service delivery compliance

  • Appropriate patient allocation within discipline and assist other departments when need be
  • Demonstrating commitment and knowledge to the Life Rehabilitation model of service delivery and philosophy
  • Enforcing compliance of the model within the rehabilitation team on an ongoing basis
  • Provide direction and inspire positive work behaviour and performance outputs amongst the team
  • Developing of strong, professional relationships with the entire rehabilitation team

Fulfilling the requirements of the discipline-specific job as per job-specification

  • Provide therapy to assigned patients
  • Quality Clinical Documentation for all allocated patients
  • Participation in team activities and unit development, as required
  • Coordination of comprehensive quality therapy delivery within rehabilitation service.
  • Manage own clinical caseload
  • Provide case studies and feedback
  • Marketing of the unit to other facilities referral hospitals
  • Networking with appropriate stakeholders
  • Create a unit culture, which promotes business objectives, a performance / results orientation, customer focus and teamwork.
  • Promote and maintain sound and productive relationships with referral sources and stakeholders in the field of Rehabilitation.
  • Active participation in national therapy management forum.
Requirements
  • Minimal 8 years Qualification as a Speech and Language Therapist
  • Full time position
  • HPCSA Registration
  • Relevant, post-basic Rehabilitation-specific training
  • Active membership in Rehabilitation-specific Associations such as SANDTA, SANRA, SASCA
  • 8 years’ experience and more than 5 years in a rehabilitation-specific environment
  • Proven interest in skills-development and involvement in professional development, including conference attendance and presentation
  • Experience in student training and supervision
  • Computer proficiency
  • Proven and recognized further training within their profession in the field of rehabilitation.
  • Organized, results-driven and team-oriented.
  • High level of drive and motivation, with ability to instill motivation in team-members
  • Active problem-solving capacity.
