Introduction

Vacancy exists for Unit Manager: Theatre Qualified, based at Life Peglerae Hospital, reporting to Theatre Manager – Chantal Marais. We are seeking a dynamic, highly motivated, and experienced professional to join our team as Unit Manager: Theatre. The successful candidate will provide strong clinical leadership, ensure excellence in patient care, and manage the operational efficiency of the theatre complex in accordance with hospital standards, infection prevention protocols, and quality improvement initiatives.

Critical Outputs
  • Ensure delivery of safe, comprehensive, and quality nursing care within the operating room environment
  • Maintain and improve clinical standards, policies, and procedures in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor patient safety initiatives and infection prevention and control practices within the theatre complex.
  • Ensure effective management of surgical lists, theatre utilisation, and patient flow.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary team collaboration to optimise perioperative patient outcomes.
  • Monitor and manage clinical risks, adverse events, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure accurate clinical documentation and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Facilitate staff training, mentoring, and continuous professional development within the unit together with the Clinical Training Coordinator.
  • Manage staffing requirements, resource allocation, and operational efficiency of the operating room.
  • Drive compliance with accreditation standards, SANC regulations, and hospital protocols.
  • Participate in audits, incident investigations, and performance improvement programmes.
  • Promote positive patient experience through professional leadership and effective communication.
  • Demonstrate visible leadership in respect of LHC values, operating model, Nursing strategy and image of the profession, actively sponsor LHC initiatives and projects to ensure continued and improved productivity.
  • Drive and manage all people related processes within unit.
  • Manage stock utilization and drive product management processes within unit together with relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure staff are trained on the operation of equipment within unit and together with relevant stakeholders ensure equipment is in working order to provide a safe patient environment.
Requirements
  • Diploma/Degree in General Nursing and Midwifery
  • Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing Science essential
  • Relevant management qualification will be advantageous
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in an operating room environment
  • Previous supervisory or management experience within a theatre complex preferred
  • Ability to function effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in hospital information systems
  • Willingness and availability to participate in the operational standby/on-call system as required by the operating theatre services
  • Valid South African driver’s licence and reliable transport
