Introduction

A vacancy exists for a Unit Manager for the ICU department based at Life Eugene Marais Hospital. The position reports to the Nurse Manager Specialized. The successful candidate will manage and co-ordinate evidence based clinical practices and resources efficiently by engaging and empowering staff within the unit to achieve the Company’s strategic objectives of Growth, Efficiency, Quality and Sustainability.

Critical Outputs

Effective clinical leadership

  • Lead the implementation of the nursing care plan and co-ordinate and facilitate the delivery of the correct treatment plan within the correct MDT program in order to achieve clinical outcomes.
  • Function as clinical expert in achieving patient outcomes.
  • Ensure competence of staff and students, determine and drive criteria for effective professional socialization, create an environment conducive to learning and provide feedback to relevant stakeholders.
  • Promote patient experience within unit, address customer complaints, conduct risk based clinical care rounds and audits to monitor quality care and report accordingly.
  • Implement national quality initiatives within unit with the focus on improved clinical outcomes and report accordingly.
  • Identify clinical and safety risks and trends in all of the above, implement corrective action where necessary and monitor on an ongoing basis.
  • Initiate and drive unit specific best operating practice, communicate these for wider implementation and participate in hospital specific marketing initiatives.

Effective people management – retaining employees through leadership and (including internal and external stakeholder - relationships):  

  • Effective recruitment and promotion of staff aligned to performance and diversity strategy.
  • Retain employees through leadership and empowerment and manage staff turnover. 

Effective visible leadership to grow the business:

  • Delivery of market leading evidenced based clinical care.
  • Effective relationship with internal and external stakeholders that enhances and optimizes business growth.

Effective leadership and people management

  • Demonstrate visible leadership in respect of the values, operating model, nursing strategy and image of the profession, actively sponsor initiatives and projects to ensure continued and improved productivity.
  • Drive and manage all people related processes within unit.

Effective financial management (including equipment)

  • Participate in business planning
  • Delivery of cost-effective, quality nursing care. 
  • Optimal and efficient human resource utilization as per agreed budgetary parameters.
  • Optimal product utilization including pharmaceuticals, equipment, and sundries.

Effective relationships with internal & external stakeholders

  • Build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders (i.e. HOD’s, Enabling functions, patients, family members, service providers etc.) through ongoing communication and feedback.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with doctors by agreeing professional code of conduct, driving and monitoring effective communication regarding positive patient outcomes, functioning as an advocate for patient care and communicate impact of industry challenges on the Nursing profession.
Requirements
  • Gr 12 Senior certificate
  • Degree or Diploma in nursing
  • Post graduate training in management will be advantageous
  • Post basic qualification in ICU- compulsory
  • Effective leadership skills including highly developed skills in communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, and negotiation.
  • Updated knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, industrial relations, standards, codes, ethics, and competency standards.
  • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in ICU
  • Unit managers experience in a high care/ICU will be an advantage
  • Understanding of the private healthcare industry, its challenges and role players would be an advantage
  • Computer proficiency
  • Driver’s license and ability to travel
