A vacancy exists for a Senior Pharmacist based at Life Eugene Marais Hospital, reporting to Pharmacy Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and co- ordinating the Pharmacy services within the hospital environment to achieve hospital and company strategic objectives.
- Critical Outputs

Effective medication risk management
- Ensure 100% reporting of medication adverse events, conduct comprehensive root cause analyses, and implement appropriate corrective and preventative actions, including incident review processes where required.
- Perform quarterly trend analyses of medication-related incidents, develop action plans in collaboration with the Pharmacy Manager, and adjust interventions to ensure sustained effectiveness.
- Report all ethical stock shortages affecting patient care, investigate underlying causes, implement remedial actions, and conduct quarterly trend analyses to prevent recurrence.
- Regularly review pharmacy medication management processes, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement best-practice solutions to strengthen medication safety and risk management.
- Develop and execute implementation plans for pharmacy policies and procedures, identify compliance gaps through Quality Management System (QMS) reviews, and drive corrective actions to achieve and maintain compliance.
- Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement and patient safety through effective monitoring, reporting, and risk mitigation strategies.
Quality, Legal & Professional
- Ensure all professional staff work in their scope of practice
- Assist with preparation of various audits- SAPC, MSA, OHSC, EMS
Effective customer satisfaction management
- Manage the agreed ethical product issuing and replenishment process to achieve customer service levels to wards and theatre
- Participate in company pharmacy customer satisfaction survey annually, identify gaps and implement remedial action
Effective people management
- Recruit, retain, motivate and develop staff according to LHC people policies and practices
Effective asset management
- Maintaining adequate stock coverage in line with agreed inventory targets to ensure continuity of patient care and operational efficiency.
- Proactively communicating with doctors, theatre teams, and ward staff regarding suitable alternative products during supplier out-of-stock situations.
- Ensuring compliance with Material Requirements Planning (MRP) processes and ethical pharmaceutical product management standards.
- Reviewing and managing dead stock reports, implementing strategies to reduce obsolete and slow-moving stock in accordance with agreed targets.
- Participating in cycle counts and stock takes to ensure compliance with governance and control requirements.
- Assist with investigating stock variances, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective and preventative actions to improve inventory accuracy and accountability on ethical products.
- Supporting effective inventory optimisation, minimising stock losses, and ensuring compliance with organisational policies and best practices.
Effective product management
- Actively managing pharmaceutical cost of sales in line with revenue targets and approved budgets.
- Leading the implementation of new formulary initiatives and regularly reviewing non-formulary purchases to ensure alignment with approved formulary standards.
- Monitoring and managing purchasing practices to improve product utilisation, standardisation, and cost efficiency.
- Ensuring pharmaceutical stock is procured from preferred suppliers in accordance with Life Healthcare procurement agreements and approved supply-chain strategies.
- Collaborating with operational and clinical stakeholders to support sustainable inventory management and maximise value through effective procurement practices.
- Requirements

- B.Pharm
- Relevant clinical knowledge and experience to the critical outputs
- Current registration with South African Pharmacy Council
- Understanding of pharmacy and related healthcare industry, legislation, regulation and challenges
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical legislation
- Pharmaceutical product knowledge
- Computer proficiency (MS office)
