Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary

Introduction

A vacancy exists for an Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary based at Life Renal Dialysis, Kempton Park, reporting to the Renal Unit Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering safe; evidenced based patient; holistic and optimal quality nursing care in collaboration with the team; to end stage renal failure patients under the supervision of the Registered/Enrolled Nurse; to maximise positive outcome for the patient in line with the company and Hospital Strategic Objectives of Growth; Efficiency; Quality and Sustainability.

• Read; understand and adhere to HR policies and procedures.
• Ensure professionalism in own work activities; report identified misconduct; performance concerns; other IR incidents to the UM in accordance with the company’s IR policy and procedure.
• Identify and discuss personal growth and developmental needs regarding personal career pathway with the Unit Manager to ensure appropriate developmental opportunities to advance career progression.
• Act in an ethical; transparent and morally defensible manner.
• Wear your uniform neatly.

• Complete both Macro induction outcomes and Micro Unit Specific Orientation outcomes as per LHC induction policy.

• Complete CPD and essential competencies as per the company CPD policy including CPR.
• Ensure management of own absenteeism and discuss your concerns with the Unit Manager.
• Participate in creating and sustaining a working environment; culture and atmosphere that promotes and encourages employee engagement; growth; development and staff retention.
• Participate in joint performance management reviews as per the company’s performance management programme.

 

Optimisation: Cost effective and appropriative use of resources

 

• Adhere to the clocking system and absenteeism processes (sick leave/annual leave etc)
• Support redeployment to other units due to operational requirements.
• Comply with shift changes and measures implemented in relation to cost and staffing efficiencies when the renal unit activities decrease.
• Recognize busy times and changes in the renal unit activities to promote effective teamwork.
• Store equipment clean and safe; always keep records.
• Pack stock room according to first in first out.
• Alerting the unit manager about incoming stock.
• Circle expiry dates.
• Locking of storeroom when not in use
• Identify cost saving initiatives at the unit level.
• Contribute to effectively managing the following expenses:
• Electricity and water consumption
• Stationery
• Non chargeable stock
• Telephone usage
• Waste segregation

Optimisation: Delivery of clinical patient care and safety

• Set-up the environment for dialysis treatment readiness.
• Provide basic nursing care to the patients.
• Prepare, clean and tidy dialysis environment and equipment’s, as required by clients and in between shifts.
• Ensure that the blood pressure cuffs; machines around the bed; thermometers; saturation probe etc are functional and clean.
• Assist with the patients’ using wheelchairs and ensure cleanliness of the wheelchairs.
• Participate in building a culture of quality customer excellence.
• Arrange patient’s files are in order when patients.
• Ensure that all patients have been weighed accordingly.
• Check and record room temperatures and report abnormalities to the Unit Manager.
• Check the TVs and emergency bells working and report any deviations to the Renal Practitioner /Renal Unit Manager.
• Ensure disinfection of machines, cleaning of BP cuffs in between each session and weekly degreasing of the machines.

Optimisation: Excellence Orientation

• Be able to recognize the need to act; consider the risks and take responsibility.
• Collect stock per patient from the stockroom.
• Line the machines before treatment commence.
• Switch dialysis machines on and put into T1 Test.
• Strip the machines off and clean after each dialysis.
• Do vital signs; blood glucose test and monitor abnormalities; alert the Renal Practioner accordingly.
• Ensure correct segregation of waste after each shift.
• Attending to clients basic nursing care needs to enhance positive patient experience in the renal unit.
• Report near misses and adverse events according to the company’s policy and procedure.
• Always adhere and apply to infection control principles i.e Hand Hygiene and Health and safety policies.
• Participate in clinical reaching at patient bedside in line with your scope of practice.
• Switch television sets on for all patients, assist with earphones.
• Order the patients’ meals.
• Serve the patients’ meals.

 

Drive: Effective communication:

• Put clients at ease and build sound relationships based on mutual trust and openness.
• Assist patients to and from their chairs.
• Assist patients to their cars if necessary.
• Ensure patients sign the attendance register.
• Assisting clients in resolving their complaints and escalating to the Renal Practitioner/Renal Unit Manager.
• Support patients during meals distribution and help those who need assistance.
• Being able to follow up and maintain high quality and productivity is always consistent (conscientiousness; accurate and neat).
• Build relationship within the renal unit with all stakeholders.
• Attend training as allocated by the Unit Manager.
• Attend meetings as allocated and required by the Unit Manager.
• Keep up to date with the latest techniques, equipment and procedures within your scope of practice.

Requirements

• Registration as an Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary by South African Nursing Council.
• Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
• First aid training is considered an advantage.
• Previous experience in a hospital environment and renal units.
• Relevant experience and technical skills to meet critical outputs.

Clinical Skills

• Basic knowledge of Anatomy and Renal Disease.
• Basic knowledge of general and renal nursing procedures within your scope of practice.
• Basic knowledge of all nursing related legislation.
• Ability to conduct clinical assessments and diagnostic tests e.g Urine analysis; vital signs; blood glucose testing and recognizing abnormalities; escalating them to the Renal Practitioner.
