Chronic mental healthcare

This is a safe, nurturing space for those with mental illness in which to heal. Accommodation is in small, personalised cubicles, with some mental health facilities offering independent living units and assisted living facilities.

These can be used as stepping stones back into the community, or patients can remain at the mental health treatment centres for assistance and supervision. Patients are discharged back into the community once they have completed their programme, or when suitable accommodation becomes available.

Chronic mental health patients (who have had multiple admissions to acute psychiatric facilities) are considered for placement at Life Nkanyisa facilities, as they offer longer-term programmes.

Patients at these facilities often have co-morbidities:

  • HIV/Aids
  • TB
  • Substance abuse
  • Chronic health conditions such as diabetes and/or hypertension

All of these can have an impact on rehabilitation and can complicate the patient’s care, treatment, rehabilitation and recovery.
