Introduction

A vacancy exists for a Hospital Maintenance Supervisor, based at Life Nkanyisa - Kirkwood Care Centre (chronic psychiatric Hospital), reporting to Hospital Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible to provide leadership, technical direction and guidance to the Hospital Engineering function. This entails ensuring that the maintenance and operation of movable and immovable plant and equipment as well as execution of infrastructure and construction projects in the business is carried out in an effective, safe and compliant manner that is aligned to applicable best practices and legislation.

Critical Outputs

Effectively manage relationships with the business and provide professional leadership, influence and two-way communication:

  • Effectively manage the hospital engineering department, drive maintenance best practices to maximise overall plant and equipment efficiency (OPEE) and availability.
  • Effectively manage all aspects of the team – includes; performance, recruitment, development and retention.
  • Develop the engineering management capability and competence through training, coaching and mentorship in the department.
  • Collaborate effectively with own peers, other functions and the business to; identify and prioritize opportunities, promote agreements on engineering project specifications and procedures, to mobilize resources and to deliver on all objectives.
  • Drive strategic input and initiatives to maximise efficiencies - review of the utility costs (water, electricity, and steam), plant and equipment modification projects.
  • Track and report functional metrics/ key performance indicators to identify and deliver on opportunities for improvement.
  • Perform administrative functions – includes; reviewing and writing performance reports, document management, data analysis, validating expenditures, enforcing rules, and support decisions about key engineering projects.
  • Effectively review, audit, monitor and evaluate performance of the engineering quality system.
  • Prepare budgets and bids; drive contract negotiations and address any engineering project disputes
  • Develop and implement operations engineering best practices, policies, standards and safe work procedures:
  • Conduct regular engineering policy implementation audits and effectively drive implementation of corrective actions.
  • Effectively drive installation, testing, operating, maintenance and repair of plant and equipment.

Effective Implement the maintenance management strategy as cascaded by Group to optimize plant and equipment performance:

  • Compile an equipment master plan and drive annual verification exercises.
  • Establish equipment specifications set by original equipment manufacturers (OEEs)
  • Supports rollout to hospital and effectively manage Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and effectively manage implementation thereof.
  • Evaluate CMMS Tool utilization through conducting regular audits and data integrity assurance processes and report on compliance.
  • Drive maintenance breakdown data collection, analyse trends, design long term solutions and improve equipment reliability.
  • Provide input to the plant and equipment replacement plan, support prioritization of plan and monitor and evaluate performance.
  • Evaluate plant and equipment failure and analyse root causes using best practices - Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics (CMD) etc.

Assume the responsibility of the Hospital GMR2.1:

  • Drive compliance in respect of safety legislations – OHS Act, NEMA, R158, R187, and Construction regulation, SANS etc.
  • Drive regular audits to ensure compliance.
  • Draw up noncompliance records and drive corrective actions implementation
  • Perform incident investigations, establish reporting criteria and drive reporting.
  • Develop and roll out engineering safety campaigns ensure conduct verification processes to establish effectiveness.

Investigate industry technology, evaluate benefits, conduct business case appraisal and motivate funding.

Drive engineering projects delivery at hospital level:

  • Develop a project baseline for engineering projects undertaken by the hospital.
  • Working with project department; provide projects cost estimates, time and resource, project requirements and lay down the project execution plan
  • Support the project plans, protocols, procedures, and methods to communicate project information and issues (including forms, templates, records-keeping and reporting), issued by business
  • Manage project risk arising during project execution.
  • Working with project department; analyze resource capacity plans and forecasts to manage and guide capacity availability for projects undertaken by the hospital.

Project performance tracking:

  • Audit & track on-going projects at regular intervals to ensure projects are on course and follow approved methodologies.
  • Working with head office projects department collate project status Information and update cycle of work plans including establishing project information dashboards that provide for clear projects status.
  • Consolidate and analyse data collected from projects status information, compare to with baseline and communicate status to the hospital management review.
  • Drive the implementation of corrective action as decided by management, through the Management of Change process (MOC).
  • Gather and archive projects experiences, lessons learnt and reusable data to improve project management methods in the future
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in either Mechanical or Electrical (Heavy Current) Engineering with a minimum of 2 years in operations or engineering maintenance and projects or,
  • National Diploma in either of the above listed qualification with a minimum of 5 years in operations or engineering maintenance and projects or,
  • Certificated engineer with GCC (factories) and a minimum of 5 years practical experience in the operation or engineering maintenance and projects.
  • Practical experience in the hospital environment or similar environment is essential.
  • Proven leadership and people management experience
  • Knowledge of contracts negotiation and management, OHS Act regulation, facilities management, financial, project management and engineering procurement practices.
  • Understanding of the private healthcare industry, its challenges and role players would be an advantage.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Driver’s license and ability to travel.
