  • 159 beds and 4 theatres including a laminar flow theatre for hip and knee replacements
  • A 24-hour accident and emergency unit equipped to deal with major and minor medical emergencies

  • A 19 bed maternity unit with well-appointed wards and secure facilities. This unit is ably supported by a mother and baby clinic which provides support to the mother after delivery

    Life Midmed maternity team is dedicated to the well-being, health and comfort of mother and child, before, during and after birth. Specialists, paediatricians and professional nurses provide around-the-clock care, support and guidance on all aspects of pregnancy, birth, motherhood and parenting.

    • A 19 bed maternity unit with secured access to ensure the safety of your baby consists of 2 labour rooms, 7 private rooms, 2 semi private rooms as well as 2 general rooms.

    The birth of a baby is one of the most significant life experiences for a woman and her partner. At Life Midmed Hospital, the best medical care and personal attention ensures that this event is memorable, enjoyable and as trouble free as possible.

    Top gynaecologists and paediatricians based at Life Midmed Hospital ensure that a mother and her baby remain in good health throughout pregnancy, during labour and after birth.

    In addition, Life Midmed Hospital is home to the latest technology and state-of-the-art equipment, including a special Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for special-needs babies.

    We want to make sure that you and your baby`s stay with us is as comfortable and relaxing as possible. We assure you right from the outset, our staff will help you in every way to enjoy this wonderful experience. To help you feel more confident about the delivery of your baby, Sr. Bettie van Aarde and her team will help you with the bed bookings and assist with the necessary information with your bed booking on 35 week.

    For your own peace of mind, please check with your medical aid regarding the benefits available for your confinement.

    Pre-admission clinic

    In order to speed up the admission process, we request you to go to Preadmission, on the ground floor, (open Monday to Friday between 08h00 and 16h00) from 35 weeks into your pregnancy, in order to complete the necessary documentation for your forthcoming admission. We need copies of the ID`s of both the parents.

    If your Medical aid requires a preauthorisation number, please bring this with you too. Kindly note that should you have a 3rd generation birth as a medical aid patient – you are required to please inform the hospital / pre-admissions clerk upon bed bookings. This information is critical and we ask that you please contact pre-admissions if you are not certain.

    Baby registration at hospital

    Bring 2 certified copies of the mother’s and father’s ID for baby registration together with a black pen.

    Visiting Hours

    In the maternity ward visitors are restricted to 2 per bed. Please advise your friends and family prior to the birth of the baby to avoid misunderstandings.

    Recommended: Fathers may visit between 08h00 and 21h00. Visiting hours for family and friends are restricted to 10h00 – 11h00, 15h00 to 16h00 and 19h00 to 20h00.

    No children under the age of 16 (apart from siblings) may visit in the maternity unit. Kindly note that this is in the interest of the mother and baby’s health, in order to minimise infection risks.

    Security for mother and baby

    Restricted visiting also helps our staff to ensure your baby`s security, as unidentified visitors are not permitted into the ward out of designated visiting times.

    For your baby`s safety and for your peace of mind, the ward door is locked at all times.

    At the Life Midmed hospital, we take pride in providing you information that you need in order to make your stay with us a pleasant and quality experience.

    Accommodation

    Accommodation at our hospital is extensive and includes:

    • Day beds
    • Private wards
    • General wards
    • High care units
    • Intensive care units
    • Paediatric ward – video controlled security doors to ensure the safety and security of young patients

    We also offer TVs in all of our wards. If any patient requires earphones, these can be purchased at reception for a nominal fee.

    Private wards are all en-suite. An a la carte menu is available. We also cater for special diets e.g. Halaal Foods and Traditional Foods 


    Admission

    Our admission process can be made much easier for you, if the following simple guidelines are followed.

    • Medical aid patients should check with their medical aid / scheme prior to admission to obtain pre-authorisation, if deemed necessary by the medical aid / scheme.
    • Patients have to present their medical aid card and identity document on admission. Persons under the age of 18 have to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
    • To speed up admission, a pre-admission form is available from the resident doctor`s rooms and the hospital`s reception, and should be either handed through to the hospital`s reception or faxed through to us prior to hospitalisation. Please click here to find our contact details.
    • Or visit our Pre-Authorization department in the hospital at reception.

    Cell phones, radios and CD players

    In the interest of other patients, personal radios, and CD players are not allowed in the wards unless being used with headphones.

    We recommend that you do not bring cell phones to the hospital, but should you do so these may not be used in general wards by patients or visitors. Should you wish to make use of our security safe to secure your cell phone until discharge, kindly ask the receptionist on admission or the unit manager or ward secretary.


    Coffee shop

    Melargo Coffee Shop/Kiosk is situated on the first floor with the following operating hours:

    • Monday – Friday: 08h00 – 20h00
    • Saturday: 08h00 – 16h00 and 19h00 – 20h00
    • Sunday: 09h00 – 16h00 and 19h00 – 20h00


    Discharge

    On leaving, do not forget to collect your medication and x-rays.


    Marketing and communications co-ordinator

    Our marketing and communications co-ordinator serves as a link between the hospital, patients, doctors and staff. Should you need any assistance please contact Helani Nel at Helani.Nel@lifehealthcare.co.za If you are from out of town, the marketing and communications co-ordinator and reception desk has a list of accommodation near the hospital for family members.


    Pre-admission

    A Pre-admission should be carried out at least 48 hours prior to admission in order to be able to speed up the admission process. Pre-Admission forms are available from your doctor’s rooms or the hospital’s reception department. After completion of the pre-admission form it can be either faxed to the hospital on 086 226 3907 prior to hospitalisation or handed in personally at the pre-admission clinic. A sms or telephone call will be made informing the patient about authorisation received from the medical aid as well as any co-payments where applicable.


    Service monitoring

    In keeping with our goal to continue providing high quality care; we monitor our service to patients on an ongoing basis. Customer satisfaction is measured in every department. On discharge patients are asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their stay at the hospital. Participation is voluntary, but this will assist the hospital management to address any problems and improve our service to you.

    Smoking

    For obvious reasons smoking is not allowed in any part of the hospital. A designated smoking area is provided on the 1st floor and in the outside areas at the front of the hospital.


    Surgical and theatre patients

    Unless otherwise stated by your doctor, do not eat or drink anything for at least six hours prior to admission.

    If you have a cold, fever, rash or if you are simply not feeling well, contact your doctor immediately as he or she may need to postpone your operation.

    Please note that the time you are asked to report to the hospital will differ from the time at which your operation actually takes place. This is done to facilitate the time allocation for the theatres as well as to accommodate emergencies and variances, which occur from time to time. Please prepare yourself for a waiting period and bring reading material or something to keep yourself occupied.


    Tariffs

    • Our hospital charges patients at medical aid / medical scheme rates.
    • A prepayment is required on hospitalisation, from patients not covered by medical aid or a medical scheme.
    • It is recommended that private patients contact the hospital`s accounts department prior to admission to establish the estimated hospital cost.
    • Patients requesting accommodation in private wards will be requested to pay the private ward rate on admission.


    Valuables

    We encourage you not to bring valuables (e.g. cell phones, jewellery, large amounts of money) to the hospital, but should you do so, we recommend that you make use of our security safe for those items you may wish to put away. Whilst every effort is made to protect patients` belongings, we cannot be held responsible for any loss that may occur.


    Visitor Information

    We welcome visitors, as we know what a difference the support of close family and friends can make. In terms of this, and bearing in mind the rest that all patients require, THEREFORE no visitors will be allowed between 21h00 and 07h00 daily:

    Designated visiting hours are as follows:

    General wards:

    • 10:00 – 11:00
    • 15:00 - 16:00
    • 19:00 - 20:00

    Children’s wards:

    • 10:00 – 11:00
    • 15:00 - 16:00
    • 19:00 - 21:00

    Maternity unit

    • 08:00 – 21:00 (Fathers)
    • 10:00 - 11:00
    • 15:00 - 16:00
    • 19:00 - 20:00 (Friends and family, except for siblings, no children under the age of 16 allowed)

    Neonatal Intensive Care unit (Parents only)

    • 10:00 - 11:00
    • 13:00 - 14:00
    • 19:00 - 20:00

    Intensive care and high care units

    • 11:00 - 11:30
    • 15:00 - 16:00
    • 19:00 - 20:00

    Further to this, there are other rules that apply in terms of visiting and they are:

    • Visitors are restricted to three per patient at one time. Children are welcome provided that they have adult supervision.
    • In the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), we only allow two family members per patient.
    • In the High Care wards, two visitors per patient are allowed.
    • Permission is to be obtained from the unit manager for visiting outside these times.
