Our facilities
Life Entabeni Hospital has recently opened a brand new, state-of-the-art renal unit, based at Life St Joseph’s, which is adjacent to the hospital. The18-station facility provides haemodialysis treatment for patients with chronic renal failure, in a hospital setting.
The unit is proud to offer:
- State-of-the-art renal haemodialysis equipment
- Two full-time nephrologists (specialists in renal medicine)
- A qualified team of registered and experienced renal specialised nurses and renal technologists
- Immediate and accessible emergency medical care
- Life Rehabilitation unit, unit which provides acute rehabilitation for patients disabled by traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury and other disabling conditions. The unit has the capacity to provide acute neuro-rehabilitation for 40 adult patients recovering from strokes, spinal injuries, head injuries or other debilitating conditions. A new specialised 10-bed paediatric acute rehabilitation unit has also been constructed - the first of its kind in the province. Facilities within the new unit include break-away and multi-purpose rooms in the adult and paediatric wings which will be used for dining, games and recreational activities and also for group therapy sessions. Adult and paediatric patients can also enjoy a family room and a gymnasium. An ADL (Activities of daily living) room, equipped with home facilities such as a kitchen and bathroom, has been added to assist patients to practice their skills learnt in preparation for re-integration into home living. A dedicated team of specialised staff ensures patients are exposed to the highest standard of acute rehabilitation services and comprises a neurologist, general practitioner, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, a speech therapist, psychologist, social worker, dietician, as well as one of the first occupational therapy technicians to qualify in South Africa. Nurses within the ward are specifically trained in rehabilitation nursing
- A dedicated cardiac ward, an 11 bed cardiac thoracic intensive care unit, equipped with leading diagnostic and monitoring facilities for patients suffering from major medical conditions requiring cardiac physician intervention. The hospital’s cardiac centre recently celebrated its 20th anniversary
- A 24-hour trauma and emergency unit, this level one trauma unit has a dedicated helicopter landing pad
- A 14 bed intensive care unit, for patients recovering from major neuro, cardiac, orthopaedic and general surgery
- Epilepsy monitoring unit with 24 hour video EEG
- A lung centre for breathing problems
- A radiology facility, with a comprehensive range of sophisticated diagnostic equipment. This facility includes a CT scanner, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner and a radioisotope nuclear medicine laboratory
- A 36-bed dedicated and state of the art neurosurgical ward with sweeping views of the cityscape and harbour. The ward has four private en-suite rooms, as well as an executive/VIP suite. The VIP suite - with its own lounge, flat screen television, kitchen, WiFi/internet connection and a sleeper couch for the patient’s guests to stay overnight if necessary – can be compared to a five-star hotel room. Two five-bedded wards – one for female and the other for male patients – are located close to the nurses’ station, allowing staff optimal observation of recovering patients.
