Brooklyn Day Hospital is a surgical facility catering mainly for day patients and, where necessary, patients are accommodated overnight.

At Life Healthcare, we take pride in providing you, information that you need in order to make your stay with us a pleasant experience.

Admission

Our admission process can be made much easier for you, if the following simple guidelines are followed. Admissions can be done in advance and this is advisable to ensure all medical aid / medical scheme requirements are met before actual admission.

Pre-admission: Please complete and return the pre-admission forms the day before your admission, the forms are available from the doctor’s rooms or from Life Brooklyn Day Hospital on 012 433 0860 or bdh@lifehealthcare.co.za

The following items are required for admission:

  • Current medical aid card
  • ID book
  • Pre-authorisation number, if applicable
  • Prepayment by private patients
  • X-rays, if applicable
  • Current medication prescribed, if applicable
  • It is advised to leave cash or valuables such as jewellery at home as the hospital could not accept responsibility for any losses.
  • Firearms are not permitted.

Other important information:

  • Do not eat or drink six (6) hours prior to your admission at the hospital.
  • You should report to the hospital’s admissions desk at least 1 hour prior to the time at which the surgery is scheduled.
  • A parent or legal guardian, has to sign consent for the procedure, should accompany patients of under 18 years of age. (Relatives or friends may not sign the consent to operation).
  • Parents or legal guardian whose child has undergone surgery is advised to stay with the child until discharged.

Discharge

  • You should not drive a car, operate machinery or take alcohol for at least 24 hours following anaesthesia as your judgement may still be impaired.
  • The patient is not allowed to leave the hospitale on his/her own, please arrange for a relative or friend to accompany you home.
  • Please follow instructions regarding post-operative care and take all prescribed medicines.


Payment

  • Our fees are competitively charged at medical aid rates applicable to day hospitals.
  • If you are a member of a medical aid fund, your account will be sent to your fund for payment. However you are liable for payment until the account is settled in full. All medical aid co-payments as specified by your medical aid are payable on admission.
  • If you are a private patient you should please make arrangements for payment with the centre prior to your admission.
  • Payment can be made by credit card or cash.
  • The hospital’s account does not include the fees charged by your doctor or the anaesthetist involved in the procedure.

Service monitoring

In keeping with our goal to continue providing high quality care, we monitor our service to patients on an ongoing basis. On discharge patients are asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their stay in the surgical centre. Participation is voluntary, but it does assist management in addressing any problems and improving our service to you.

Visitor Information

  • We welcome all our patients’ visitors, as we know what a difference the support of close family and friends can make.
  • Parents are encouraged to stay with their children both before and after surgery.
