Cardiac overview
Our cardiac unit has established itself as one of the foremost centres of its
kind in the country. Following the introduction of world-class facilities, our cardiac
unit is helping many patients to improve the quality of their lives through the
early diagnosis and treatment of a wide spectrum of cardiac conditions.
Our dedicated, multi-disciplinary team of leading supporting specialists, other
healthcare professionals and specialist nursing staff, together with our state of the art
facilities and technology ensure the best possible cardiac service to the Cape Town
community.
Cardiac services
- A 24-hour level 1 trauma and emergency unit, with helicopter landing pad, and capable of handling all cardiac emergencies. Our nursing staff is fully qualified in emergency medicine, and a doctor is on the premises 24 hours a day
- High-technology cardiac catheterisation laboratories
- Dedicated cardio-thoracic theatres
- A 14 bed medical intensive care unit equipped with diagnostic and monitoring facilities such as advanced life support and resuscitation facilities, and with a spacious, innovative design aimed at facilitating both nursing excellence and positive patient outcomes. A wide spectrum of medical emergencies is treated in the medical intensive care unit. These include:
- heart attacks
- septic shock
- severe pneumonia
- emphysema
- severe asthma
- A 14 bed surgical intensive care unit equipped with life-support equipment for patients recovering from major cardiac, general and neurosurgery.
